Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has served as both a spice and a medicine for more than 2,500 years. Traditional Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Unani systems all use its rhizome to soothe digestion, ease pain, and warm the body during illness. Modern research now offers a clearer picture of where the traditional claims align with clinical evidence — and where they do not.
Here is what current studies show about ginger’s effects on nausea, inflammation, gut health, and metabolic markers, along with what to know about safe use.
The active compounds behind the benefits
Ginger’s pharmacological activity comes largely from gingerols in the fresh rhizome and shogaols, which form when ginger is dried or heated. A 2020 review published in Foods summarized more than 400 identified constituents, noting that 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol drive most of the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and gut-motility effects observed in laboratory and clinical studies.
These compounds appear to modulate several pathways at once — including the cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) inflammatory enzymes, serotonin receptors in the gut, and the vanilloid pain receptor TRPV1.
Nausea: the strongest evidence
The most consistent clinical signal for ginger is nausea relief across multiple contexts.
Pregnancy-related nausea
A 2014 systematic review in Nutrition Journal pooled 12 randomized trials covering 1,278 pregnant participants and concluded that ginger significantly reduced nausea compared with placebo, with a safety profile comparable to vitamin B6. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) lists ginger among first-line non-pharmacological options for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, typically at doses of 250 mg four times daily.
Chemotherapy-induced nausea
A 2013 URCC CCOP trial published in Supportive Care in Cancer randomized 576 cancer patients receiving chemotherapy to 0.5 g, 1.0 g, or 1.5 g of ginger daily or placebo, alongside standard antiemetics. All ginger doses reduced acute nausea severity, with 0.5 g and 1.0 g producing the strongest effects. A 2022 meta-analysis in Nutrition Reviews that pooled 10 trials confirmed a moderate but consistent benefit when ginger was added to standard care.
Postoperative and motion sickness
A Cochrane-style systematic review published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia (2000) analyzed five trials and found that 1 g of ginger taken before surgery reduced postoperative nausea and vomiting compared with placebo. Ginger has a long traditional reputation for aiding digestion, and modern studies partially support it.
A trial published in the European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology (2008) tested 1.2 g of ginger in 24 healthy adults with functional dyspepsia and reported that stomach emptying accelerated from a median of 16 minutes to 12 minutes after the meal — a mechanism that may relieve bloating and post-meal discomfort.
A 2019 randomized trial in the World Journal of Gastroenterology examined ginger in 45 adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). While symptom improvement occurred in both the ginger and placebo groups, the trial was small and researchers called for larger studies before drawing firm conclusions.
Emerging research is also examining ginger’s effects on the gut microbiome. A 2022 pilot study in Nutrients reported that daily ginger juice for four weeks shifted the ratio of beneficial to potentially harmful bacterial species in healthy adults, though the sample size was small.

Forms and dosing used in research
Trials have used fresh ginger, dried powder, standardized extracts, and ginger essential oil capsules. Most positive nausea studies used 250 mg to 1 g of powdered ginger, while anti-inflammatory and metabolic trials used 1 to 3 g daily divided into two or three doses. Benefits generally emerged after two to four weeks of consistent use.
Common practical forms include fresh grated ginger (about a 1 cm cube equals roughly 1 g), ginger tea steeped from 5 to 10 g of fresh root, or capsulated dried powder at 250 to 500 mg.
Safety, side effects, and interactions
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) reports that ginger is generally safe in dietary amounts and well tolerated in clinical trials at doses up to 4 g per day. Common side effects are mild and include heartburn, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort.
Ginger can, however, affect blood clotting by inhibiting platelet aggregation. People taking anticoagulants such as warfarin, apixaban, or high-dose aspirin should speak with a healthcare provider before using concentrated ginger extracts. Ginger may also lower blood glucose and blood pressure, which can compound the effect of diabetes and hypertension medications.

Moderate evidence supports its role in easing osteoarthritis pain and lowering inflammatory markers, and emerging evidence points to modest benefits for blood glucose control and digestion.
