In a landmark 2015 analysis published in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers led by Dr. Jari Laukkanen reported that men who used a sauna 4–7 times per week had a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death and a 40% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to those who used it once per week.

- Start with shorter sessions of 5–10 minutes and build up gradually.
- Drink water before and after; avoid alcohol before or during.
- Leave the sauna if you feel lightheaded, nauseated, or unusually short of breath.
- Cool down slowly rather than jumping into extreme cold if you have cardiovascular risk factors.
The Bigger Picture
Sauna use is best understood as one potential component of a broader heart-healthy lifestyle, not a substitute for the fundamentals: not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, managing blood pressure and cholesterol, sleeping well, and staying physically active. The World Health Organization continues to identify these traditional pillars as the most reliable levers for reducing cardiovascular disease, which remains the leading cause of death globally.
Still, for a practice that costs relatively little and integrates easily into daily routines, the accumulated evidence linking regular sauna bathing to a healthier cardiovascular system is intriguing — and a reminder that some of the most promising longevity strategies may be ancient, not new.
